X-FLEX tools and pilot sites, what's new?

The solutions offered by X-FLEX are being developed and they are on a good track. Find out its status and watch the Albena virtual visit!
MARKETFLEX
MARKETFLEX, the tool that enables aggregators, BRPs, and DSOs to trade capacity and flexibility services, is reaching its final version.
Last year, the tool specifications have been defined and the communication process between MARKETFLEX and the other actors have been agreed upon.
Since then, the development of the MARKETFLEX tool has been ongoing. Among the main functionalities of the tool, two market segments are already available: day-ahead and intraday. The last segment, ancillary services, will be released in September. Now, the testing session will begin with onsite activities to make sure that the algorithms are running smoothly and the signals are well received by all units. We are especially eager to test our innovative clearing algorithms, named "premium capacity", "social equity 1" and "social equity 2" in the local market of Luče!
In the final straight for the development of the MARKETFLEX platform's functionalities, the connection to the external wholesale market for Ravne and Albena pilots will be achieved and tested from September.
By the end of the year, we will gather enough data to give the first insights from our local markets! ↓

→The main functionalities of GRIDFLEX, the tool for DSOs and microgrid operators, have been developed, lab-tested, and integrated with real data coming from the 4 pilots in the project. These functionalities include: Network Topology Modelling, Demand and Production Forecasting, State Estimation, Power Flow Calculation, Congestion Detection and Forecasting, Fraud Detection Analysis, Grid Planning, and Scheduling, and Resilience in Extreme Weather Conditions. The current efforts are focused on the integration of the communication among the modules created by the different partners involved in the development of the tool (ETRA, ICCS, and UL). Moreover, the communication with MARKETFLEX—both for notification of grid conditions to the Market and request of Ancillary Services to mitigate problems in the network—has been defined together with UL and SUITE5, and will be implemented and tested in the next months. The completion of these integration tasks will enable the start of the evaluation of the tool by technical partners and pilots, including the calculation of KPIs to assess the validity of the Requirements and Use Cases associated with the tool.↓

→The final version of the SERVIFLEX tool is available, embedding all functionalities pertaining to the toolchain from collecting raw data in order to extract asset level flexibility profiles to further managing them in order to establish optimal Virtual Power Plant (VPP) composition for the delivery of grid services. The main technical innovation of SERVIFLEX tool is the clustering and segmentation mechanisms that have been incorporated into the tool in order to handle the multi-type Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) on the basis of their actual, locally estimated flexibility, enabling the configuration of dynamic Virtual Power Plants, rather than matching the assumed flexibility profiles of specific assets to a generic class and then extracting flexibility estimations. In addition, an intuitive user interface has been made available to the business stakeholders (demand side aggregators) for the prompt management and business optimization of the different types of DERs that are part of the portfolio.→↑

→The purpose of X-FLEX platform is to offer a reliable middleware that will facilitate the communication and data exchanges between the systems that participate in the X-FLEX project (e.g. X-FLEX tools, field assets of pilot sites, etc.). During the previous months, the consortium worked on the development of the X-FLEX platform based on the designed specifications defined at the beginning of the project. Specifically, the X-FLEX platform general-purpose modules, namely weather service provider, temporal series forecasting, data mapping/data model converters, BPMN workflows, virtual sensors, and complex event processors have been implemented in the X-FLEX platform. Furthermore, the data sources of the pilot sites have been integrated into the platform. This was an essential step towards the realization of X-FLEX UCs since the necessary data from the pilot sites are now available to the X-FLEX tools to perform their calculations. A lab version of the X-FLEX platform was deployed in a staging environment in order to test the data integration and developed functionalities. Using this lab version as a test environment, several test cases were examined in order to reassure that the platform operates as it is expected fulfilling all the requirements of X-FLEX project. At this phase of the project, the deployment of the X-FLEX platform in the production environment is performed in order to start testing X-FLEX solutions in real conditions.
During this period, in the pilot site of Xanthi (Greece), led by HEDNO, the 1st round of integration of systems and interfaces with SLS’s demo assets in the X-FLEX ecosystem has begun along with the 1st round of testing of the first versions of XFLEX tools in the pilot site. The SLAM meter equipment installation procedure has already been initiated in Xanthi’s HEDNO premises, in residential customers as well as in some RES producers. Data gathering, data assessment, and data storage is another ongoing activity in the pilot. Furthermore, a V2G simulation scenario is under development by ICCS, in which a SLS’s commercial fleet vehicle operation and charging periods will be studied in terms of discharging back to the grid and charging the SLS batteries during different energy price tariff periods. The next steps of the Greek pilot site are:
  • Procurement of Heat Pump to be installed in HEDNO premises
  • Update in the topology of lines 33X and 42M due to further RES installation during the project. HEDNO’s Xanthi pilot has seen an increase in RES penetration since the beginning of the project by doubling the RES capacity in two of the three pilot MV lines.
  • Installation of monitoring equipment at 3 additional MV/LV substations
  • The 2nd round of algorithms, tools, and interfaces.
  • Full integration with the X-FLEX platform which ingests data coming from different assets and end users within the X-FLEX ecosystem.
  • Testing of the ancillary service scenario between SLS – HEDNO. As a result, the flexibility offered by SLS to HEDNO could reduce the impact of an extreme weather event.

Albena (Bulgaria) pilot is in the process of upgrading its assets and expanding its flexibility cloud with the conversion of more boiler rooms into controllable loads, automation of the biogas power plant, and further control of its battery system. This process took longer than scheduled due to COVID-19, delivery delays, and other external factors. Now Albena is back on track with more personnel and the ambition to fulfill all the project goals on time. The connection between the devices and the X-FLEX platform has been established and data is successfully delivered to the X-FLEX platform.
Combined in-season tests with ESO are foreseen by the end of the summer. Moreover, work on task 8.4 – Synthesis, scaling up and replication has already started as Albena is the leader of this task they are working in close collaboration with the partners from the University of Ljubljana and Johannem Research.
Albena was also honored to host the second project review meeting where site visits had been organized to the equipment involved in the project such as the boiler rooms, the battery, the biogas power plant, and the solar thermal and PV installations.
In the Ravne na Koroškem (Slovenia) pilot, partners are expecting the following weeks the first test activation of our 6 MW P2H boiler from ELES – Slovenian transmission system operator (TSO). The 6 MW boiler was purchased and installed with the help of X-FLEX project and it is the only kind of this technology in Slovenia. This test activation will be the opportunity for Petrol and ELES to assess the potential and functioning of the P2X technology in practice and its impact on the stabilisation of transmission system in Slovenia and will be used as showcase for the future implementation of similar technologies.
Finally, in Luče (Slovenia) a workshop and testing of e-charging infrastructure are being scheduled to take place by the beginning of October. The aim of the workshop will be to demonstrate the potential of e-charging and other home infrastructure for providing flexibility and the potential for stabilisation of the local LV electricity network. We will also be testing different predefined scenarios for e-charging in its impact on the grid and flexibility potential.
